Personally I think these were places where hunter-gatherer tribes would congregate to find mates. The bands of people over time would end up inbred; to avoid that, different tribes would gather on occasion at these sites for "fertility" ceremonies, to find a new mate to bring into the tribe. Maybe even to perform ritual "intimate" acts on the spot, a sort of mass impregnation if you will. I think these sites were all linked to mating behavior at their core.
